The CEO of Costco is known for doing the same thing. Though he recently stepped down, he insisted on a lower salary, so that Costco as a whole could pay its employees better. 

In the 1960s, Robert Townsend, the CEO of Avis, insisted on being paid the same as his division presidents, or $35,000.

Lee Iococca insisted on being paid only $1 per year until Chrysler started turning a profit.

It does happen. Not as often as we like, but it does happen. And painting all Americans with the same brush is an ill informed choice.
